Author's Note 1: Written for fma_fic_contest's Prompt 121, Fracas. Once again, took me a while to post my story here. D:
This is a sequel of sorts to an auction fic of mine, Not Enough Time, pretty much a short in which Riza tells Roy she's pregnant. You don't have to read that story though to get this one. A couple people wanted me to write more about how Roy and Riza deal with parenting, and the idea for this story pop into my head around a month ago, but didn't go through with it until this prompt came. Thanks to lalikaa for the great betaing (I wasn't able to come up with a title for this until I read through her edit suggestions, so she gets credit for that too! XD).
When Edward and Winry had asked Roy and Riza if they could watch their children, Henry and Esther, for one night, Roy was against it. Riza knew that would be the case, so she tried talking him into it.
“We could use the practice before our first child is born,” Riza said, resting a hand on her swollen belly. “The books gave us some good advice, but nothing beats hands-on experience.”
She had hoped that would convince her husband; it did. Roy smiled softly at her.
And so Roy and Riza were stuck babysitting the Elric kids on a Saturday evening. Roy and Henry stayed in the living room while Riza was feeding Esther bottled milk in the bedroom. A content smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
Riza was now in her sixth month of pregnancy. She was nervous about being a mother, but watching over Esther relaxed her and made her feel more confident. She enjoyed cradling and feeding her at the same time. Everything was peaceful until…
“That can’t be Dad!”
“It is! I’m showing you proof right now!”
“Are you sure? That doesn’t look like him.”
“Yes! See? This is a picture of him after he came back from Liore!”
Riza blinked, wondering what was going on. Her attention then turned to Esther, who woke up and cried over the fracas. Riza rocked the baby and shushed her until she fell back to sleep. While holding Esther, Riza stood up and headed toward the living room.
“Okay you two, what’s going on?” Riza asked them as soon as she entered the living room.
“Uncle Roy said Dad used to be very short!” Henry said in a bitter tone.
A blank face crossed over Riza’s features. “What?”
“I was telling Henry some stories of his father when he was in the military,” Roy explained, “but he didn’t believe me when I mentioned Edward was short.”
Riza’s eyes glanced over the piles of pictures scattered on the coffee table. Maes had taken a lot of pictures of Roy and his team with the Elric brothers in several of them. Roy had showed her the pictures, but she thought he threw them away. Apparently her assumption was wrong.
“If Dad’s short, how come he’s taller than you now, Uncle Roy?”
Riza giggled when she saw Roy’s scowl. She wouldn’t consider him short, but found it funny that he, like Ed, didn’t want to be called that.
“Your Uncle Roy is right, though,” Riza said. “Your father was short, but grew quite fast all of a sudden.” Many years later and she still couldn’t believe how tall Edward was compared to when he first joined the military.
“I see,” Henry said. He frowned. “Dad said he had always been tall.”
That caused Roy to burst out laughing. Riza rolled her eyes.
“I can see why it’s hard for you to believe me,” Roy told Henry, still chuckling.
“Well, if Dad is tall, then I’ll be tall too! I don’t want to be made fun of if I’m short.”
Roy and Riza glanced at one another. Riza wondered if Edward and Winry knew about that—she felt sorry for Henry. She then thought of her and Roy’s expected child—he or she might feel the same way too. How would they react?
“Well, don’t you worry about it, Henry,” Roy said, beaming. “Plus, I’m sure you’ll be taller than your father.” He winked at the boy.
“Really?” Henry’s eyes lit up with glee.
Roy nodded and his grin grew wider. “Definitely.”
A tiny smile appeared on Riza’s lips. There was no doubt Roy would make a great father to their child.
Later that night Roy and Riza had put the children to bed in the guest room and were now getting ready to sleep. Riza was in the bed reading while Roy was changing to his sleeping clothes.
“Taking care of Edward’s kids wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.”
Riza snorted. “And you wouldn’t think the same way if we babysat someone else’s children?”
“Probably not,” Roy said as he slipped onto the bed and was beside her.
“I still can’t believe you had a fight with a three-year-old,” Riza said, putting the book on the drawer next to the bed.
Roy made a face. “He was the one that started it!”
Riza shook her head, but smirked. “You’re so immature.”
“Now that hurt,” Roy complained.
Riza giggled and leaned over to kiss Roy on the lips.” I’m just teasing you.”
“I know.” Roy was silent, his smile fading to a frown. “Hey, I’m curious. Do you want our child to be a boy or girl?”
Looking down at her large stomach, Riza considered what Roy asked for a moment; that hadn’t occurred to her to think about until now. She didn’t want to get her hopes up for one gender, only for the baby to be another. Whether her child was a boy or girl, though, in the end they would be taken care of with great love and care.
“I’m not sure. I guess I just want to be surprised, instead.”
From Roy’s warm expression, Riza believed he thought that way also. “He or she will grow up a good person, and I’m looking forward to that.”
Riza smiled softly at her husband and rested on his shoulders. She intertwined her fingers with his. They sat like this for a while.
Riza was glad she and Roy had looked over Ed and Winry’s children. They got a glimpse of parenthood and felt more ready to take care of their own child. She wouldn’t mind watching over Esther and Henry again and knew Roy wouldn’t either.
Author's Notes 2: There's a follow up to Not Enough Time and this story, Unexpected. I think it's actually odd I posted Unexpected first and then this story. @_@
